| The
hilly and historic volcanic island of Matacawalevu has two
villages, Matacawalevu and Vuaki. It is about 4 km long, roughly
oval in shape with a large, beautiful bay on its eastern side where
the village of Vuaki is nestled. There is a protected lagoon to
the east of the island which is the famous Blue Lagoon. The beauty
of Matacawalevu includes the fact that it has one of the longest,
whitest sand beaches in the entire region. |

Long Beach is a small family-run resort on the southern end of the island. It
opened in July 2000 and caters for a maximum of 20 guests. Long Beach is
a great spot to learn about Fijian culture with its eco-friendly theme.
Activities on offer include fishing, a medicinal walk, and cooking lessons
with the staff. Guests can even
plant a tree in memory of their visit!
The 8-bed dorm is a large traditional bure, sited on the beachfront. You
sleep in the traditional way - mattresses on a sandy floor, covered in
coconut leaves and pandanus mats.
The picture perfect white sand
beach forms a sweeping curve
around the protected lagoon
providing plenty of options for
swimming and snorkelling.
Travellers will find it an easy to
walk across to the small rocky
island of Deviulau, home to local
seabirds.
